10 Items You Can't Put in a Dumpster in Florida

Alexandra Balabanis • June 16, 2026

Renting a dumpster in Vero Beach is one of the easiest ways to handle a cleanup, renovation, or construction project. However, not everything can be tossed into a roll-off dumpster. Many items are restricted because they can be hazardous to the environment, damage equipment, or are prohibited at local landfills.

Before loading your dumpster, review this list of items that are typically not allowed.

Paints, Stains, and solvents

Liquid paints, stains, thinners, and solvents contain chemicals that can contaminate soil and groundwater. If paint has completely dried out it may be accepted, but liquid paint should be disposed of through a local hazardous waste facility. We will accept paint for you, however it has to be communicated before hand and set aside so we can take it to the appropriate area at the landfill. You may also dispose of any paints at the local recycle centers throughout Indian River and St. Lucie counties for free as a resident.

Tires

Most landfills do not accept tires in regular dumpsters because they can trap gasses and damage landfill equipment. Tires usually require special recycling or disposal. At Vero Beach Dumpster Rental and Equipment we can take care of tire disposal for you. Just set them aside of the dumpster and let us know you will be disposing of tires.

Batteries

Automotive batteries, lithium-ion batteries, and rechargeable batteries contain hazardous materials that should never be thrown into a dumpster. Many auto part stores and recycling centers accept used batteries.

Motor Oil, Gasoline, and other automotive fluids

Used oil, gasoline, antifreeze, and transmission fluid can create environmental hazards and fire risks. These items should be taken to an approved recycling or disposal facility. Most auto part stores will take these chemicals and dispose of them for free.

Propane Tanks

Propane tanks may contain residual gas, making them a safety hazard. Empty or partially full tanks should be handled through a proper recycling or exchange program. Vero Beach Dumpster Rental and equipment will take the proper steps in disposing of propane tanks for you, however please do not throw them in our dumpsters. Please set them aside and communicate you need to dispose of propane tanks and we will take them to the proper disposal areas. As a resident of Indian river, St. Lucie, Brevard counties you may take them to the nearest recycling centers for free.

Hazardous chemicals

Pesticides, herbicides, pool chemicals, cleaning chemicals, and other hazardous substances cannot be placed in a dumpster. Always follow local disposal guidelines for these products.

Electronics(depends on local regulations

Televisions, computer monitors, laptops, printers, and other electronic devices may require special recycling due to the materials they contain. Check local recycling options before disposal. Give Vero Beach Dumpster Rental and Equipment a call and we can help guide you on disposing of electronics dependent upon your location and county.

Asbestos-Containg materials

Older homes may contain asbestos in flooring, insulation, roofing materials, or siding. Asbestos requires specialized handling and disposal and should never be placed in a standard dumpster without proper procedures.

Refrigerators and appliances containing refrigerants

Appliances such as refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, and dehumidifiers contain refrigerants that must be professionally removed before disposal. Give Vero Beach Dumpster Rental a Call to see if your area has any regulations of disposing of these types of appliances.

Medical Waste

Needles, syringes, pharmaceuticals, and other medical waste require special disposal methods and cannot be placed in a roll-off dumpster. Give Vero Beach Dumpster Rental and Equipment a call at 772-268-5913 and we can help walk you through the proper disposal of medical waste.

So what can you put in our dumpsters?
